Benefits from ecological study methods to taxonomy of enchytraeids in southern Mata Atlântica PAB
Schmelz,Rüdiger Maria; Peña,Rut Maria Collado de la; Römbke,Jörg.
The objective of this work was to determine how taxonomy benefited from the ecological quantitative and site-based sampling methods in enchytraeids studies. Enchytraeids (small relatives of earthworms) were sampled in different phases of rain forest regeneration in the southern Mata Atlântica in Paraná, Brazil. The research combined ecological and taxonomic work, because enchytraeids are poorly studied and difficult to identify, and many new species were expected. The provision of large numbers of specimens enabled the test of species diagnoses by investigating the ranges of character variations in a larger series of specimens. Simplified species diagnoses adapted to the local conditions that allowed the identification of all specimens, juveniles included,...

Community structures of soil animals and survival of land snails on an island of the Ogasawara Archipelago PAB
Hasegawa,Motohiro; Sugiura,Shinji; Ito,Masamichi T.; Yamaki,Aska; Hamaguchi,Keiko; Kishimoto,Toshio; Okochi,Isamu.
On Chichijima, one of the Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands located in the Western Pacific Ocean, land snails have declined, the suggested cause being predation pressure by an invasive flatworm (Platydemus manokwari). Soil fauna were investigated in areas where the snail survives, and where it has become extinct. Much of the fauna, dominated by introduced earthworms and ants, was undiminished, however, one undescribed but endemic carabid (Badister sp.), which selectively feeds on land snails, was absent in snail-extinct areas. The invasive flatworm P. manokwari has been reported to feed also on the carcasses of earthworms, as well as on live snails, and is therefore expected to occur in most parts of Chichijima Island. Among other groups, the density of isopods...

DNA barcodes for soil animal taxonomy PAB
Rougerie,Rodolphe; Decaëns,Thibaud; Deharveng,Louis; Porco,David; James,Sam W.; Chang,Chih-Han; Richard,Benoit; Potapov,Mikhail; Suhardjono,Yayuk; Hebert,Paul D.N..
The biodiversity of soil communities remains very poorly known and understood. Soil biological sciences are strongly affected by the taxonomic crisis, and most groups of animals in that biota suffer from a strong taxonomic impediment. The objective of this work was to investigate how DNA barcoding - a novel method using a microgenomic tag for species identification and discrimination - permits better evaluation of the taxonomy of soil biota. A total of 1,152 barcode sequences were analyzed for two major groups of animals, collembolans and earthworms, which presented broad taxonomic and geographic sampling. Besides strongly reflecting the taxonomic impediment for both groups, with a large number of species-level divergent lineages remaining unnamed so far,...

Baretta,Dilmar; Brown,George Gardner; James,Samuel Wooster; Cardoso,Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira.
Araucaria angustifolia, also known as the Paraná Pine is an endangered tree species in Brazil and little is known of the diversity of soil invertebrates inhabiting these forests. Therefore, the present study was set up to evaluate the biomass and diversity of earthworms in natural and reforested Araucaria plots, impacted or not by fire, and to identify the most efficient earthworm collection method. Four study areas included: native forest with Araucaria (NF); Araucaria reforestation (R); Araucaria reforestation submitted to an accidental fire (RF); and native grass pasture with native Araucaria and submitted to an intense accidental fire (NPF). Five soil samples containing the earthworm community were taken in a 0.3 ha area in each of the forest sites,...

Global panorama of studies about freshwater oligochaetes: main trends and gaps Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Rodrigues,Luciana Falci Theza; Alves,Roberto da Gama.
Abstract Freshwater oligochaetes have been studied over the years in a wide range of habitats around the world. To analyse the data published about freshwater oligochaetes in the 31 year period between 1985 and 2015, we searched for documents in the ISI Web of Science, Scopus and SciELO databases. A total of 979 works were evaluated from 184 periodicals. The United States is the country with the most publications about aquatic oligochaetes, followed by France, Germany and Italy. Works related to the ecology and ecotoxicology of these organisms are most abundant. Studies carried out in the laboratory are most frequent, consisting of investigations involving bioassays, morphology, genetics and molecular biology. The results also show that spring, cave water...

Groundwater and marine intertidal Tubificidae (Oligochaeta) from the Canary and Cabo Verde Islands, with descriptions of two new species Naturalis
Erséus, Christer.
Seven species of Tubificidae are recorded from the Canary Islands, viz. Heterodrilus amplus n. sp., Coralliodrilus leviatriatus Erséus, 1979, Limnodriloides agnes Hrabĕ, 1967, L. janstocki n. sp., Aktedrilus cuneus Erséus, 1984, A. parvithecatus (Erséus, 1978), and Tubifex tubifex (Müller, 1774); the two latter taxa are reported also from the Cabo Verde Islands. All taxa except T. tubifex are marine and there is no evidence of endemism in the freshwater oligochaete fauna of these islands. Heterodritus amplus has short, spindle-shaped, heavily muscular atria; they are morphologically unique within the genus. Limnodriloides janstocki has modified spermathecal setae; it is distinguished from similar species by its long atrial ducts and deep, elaborate...

Mitochondrial evidence supports a Nearctic origin for the spreading limicolous earthworm Sparganophilus tamesis Benham, 1892 (Clitellata, Sparganophilidae) Naturalis
Rota, E.; Martinsson, S.; Bartoli, M.; Beylich, A.; Graefe, U.; Laini, A.; Wetzel, M.J.; Erséus, C..
We analysed samples of Sparganophilus taken at the corners of its distribution area in Europe (UK, Germany and Italy). No mitochondrial genetic divergence within and amongst them was found, neither in COI nor in 16S. Further, the COI haplotype was also identical to two sequences from Ontario, Canada in the Barcoding of Life Data System (BOLD) database. Our European COI and 16S sequences showed only minimal differentiation (only 1 or 2 substitutions) from specimens newly collected in Illinois and Washington states (USA), as well as from a COI haplotype from Tennessee (USA) in BOLD. An additional COI haplotype from Illinois (found in BOLD) is 2.1% different from the other haplotypes but clearly belongs to the same lineage of Sparganophilus. This...

The earthworm fauna of regenerating forests and anthropogenic habitats in the coastal region of Paraná PAB
Römbke,Jörg; Schmidt,Petra; Höfer,Hubert.
The aim of this study was to evaluate abundance, biomass and diversity of earthworms in the southern coast region of the Mata Atlântica biodiversity hotspot. A total of 51 study sites in pastures, banana monocultures, mixed agroforestry systems, secondary forests in succession and old-growth forests near the coast of Paraná, Brazil, were evaluated. Each site was sampled once. Species richness of the earthworms was generally low and varied little between sites. At all sites except for one, the peregrine species Pontoscolex corethrurus (Glossoscolecidae) strongly dominated. Three other peregrine species, Amynthas corticis, Amynthas gracilis (Megascolecidae) and Ocnerodrilus occidentalis (Ocnerodrilidae), were frequent in moist sites. No autochthonous species...

Ultrastructural Study of Spermatogenesis in Eisenia foetida (Annelida, Oligochaeta) International Journal of Morphology
Rolando,A.; Romanini,M. C.; Mugnaini,M. T.; Bozzo,A.; Pastorino,I.; Soñez,C. A..
Spermatogenesis and the spermatozoon ultrastructure follow a common pattern in terrestrial oligochaetes. However, many of their characteristics are distinctive of each species and they are of great importance for phylogenetic and taxonomic studies. Germinal cells were studied through conventional electronic microscope techniques in order to go deep on spermatogenesis, especially on the mature spermatozoon ultrastructure of Eisenia foetida. Spermatogenesis occurs in seminal vesicles and follows a pattern comparable to that of some other oligachaetes species. Spermatozoon ultrastructural details revealed that it is a filiform cell, with the acrosome placed in anterior position, followed by the nucleus, the midpiece and the tail which flagellum has a 9+2...
